Sheryl Sandberg to depart from Meta's board of directors

Sheryl Sandberg Said announced Wednesday that she will not stand for re-election to Meta's board of directors in May, ending her 14-and-a-half-year tenure in a formal role at the social networking company.

Ms. Sandberg remains on the nine-seat board after stepping down as Metra's chief operating officer in 2022. In a post on her personal Facebook page on Wednesday, she said she would still be an advisor to the company and “will always be there to help the Meta teams.”

“The Meta business is strong and well positioned for the future, so it feels like the time is right to step away,” he wrote.

In a comment on his Facebook page, Mark Zuckerberg, Meta's chief executive and founder, said Ms. Sandberg had been “crucial” in driving his company's success. She was elected to the board of directors of Facebook 2012When the company was facing criticism for having very few women on its board.

Mr Zuckerberg appointed Ms Sandberg as his first chief operating officer in 2008 – when the company was still known as Facebook. He oversaw Facebook's early move into digital advertising, inspiring big brands and small businesses to expand into a billion-dollar effort.

Ms. Sandberg became one of the highest-profile female executives in the business world, and eventually wrote a best-selling book, “Lean In,” about her experience.

But he also faced criticism during one of Facebook's most tumultuous periods. The Russians manipulated the company's platforms to spread misinformation in the 2016 U.S. presidential election, and its privacy and data-collection practices attracted regulatory scrutiny.
